We have a pretty awesome worship team at my church. We have traditional music as well as modern music, and it just really works for the entire congregation. When the drummer for the worship team told us that he was moving, he asked me if I would like to take over for him. I have dabbled here and there, but I was in no way able to play like he did. He told me that I could learn the basics through online drum lessons, and then I could even learn more about playing if I wanted to explore further possibilities.
He even showed me the website of a great online instructor, and I decided to go ahead and try my hand at it, literally! I had prayed on it, and it just felt like the right move to make. I started my online lessons later on that week, and I learned more in the first few lessons than I thought possible. My instructor, Jon, told me that I had natural ability, which really made me feel good because the more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. I already had a fair idea of timekeeping as well as the different measures of music, but there was and still is so much for me to learn.
Jon taught me not only the basics, but he taught me how to feel the music. He showed me how to use fills to make a song really stand out, and I had so much fun experimenting with the things that I was learning. When the former drummer of our worship group came back about four months later for a Sunday morning service, he was blown away by how far I had come. He even told me that I had surpassed what he was able to do on the drums too.
