With so many of us now working from home on a more permanent basis, long gone are the makeshift desks in the living room or the toddler-interrupted work calls. Employees are now having to invest more into their at-home workspaces in order to allow them to work better from home for the foreseeable and with this, many are looking to make their workspaces more inspiring.
On average, we work for around 252 days of the year, so it’s important that your workspace is comfortable and doesn’t impact your work productivity. Before many of us began working from home, we didn’t invest much into our workspace organisation or decor, but having an inspiring workspace can have positive effects on your day to day productivity. With this in mind, here are some easy tips on how you can make your workspace more inspiring.
Motivational Colour Palette
When it comes to decorating your workspace, it’s important to choose your colours with care. Some colours have psychological impacts on different parts of your brain, making you feel more motivated. Blue and green help to improve focus and efficiency, whilst yellow helps to lift your mood and create optimism.
Where you can, avoid using red or oranges as they can be intense and distracting. If you don’t fancy fully redecorating and redesigning your workspace, then a simple way to add some colour to your workspace is by updating your desk accessories using coloured lamps, pastel organisation boxes, fun wall art prints or quirky pen pots.
Access Natural Light
Harsh and unnatural light can negatively affect your focus and motivation and, in some cases, can even cause headaches and eye strain. It’s important to place your workspace in a light and airy space, possibly next to a window if you can.
If you need to add light to your workspace, then wall mounted lights can be a great space-saving way to create focused light without taking up any space on your desk. Be sure to pick the right bulb, so that you’re not working under a light that is too yellow and that it is bright enough for you to be able to work productively.
Invest In Plants
Not only do plants make for a fantastic desk accessory, but they also come with a host of health benefits, too. Indoor plants help to improve air quality, minimise stress levels and can even help improve memory. If you’re not particularly green-fingered, then choose easy to care for plants, such as cacti, succulents, peace lily or lavender, if you’re looking to add a relaxing scent too. If that fails, you could always get botanical wall art prints instead!
Get Organised
Organisation is a vital part of creating a productive and motivational workspace, no matter whether you’re in the office or working from home. Life happens and stuff can accumulate quickly, but that doesn’t mean that you should let it affect your workspace. Working amongst clutter can have huge impacts on your mental capacity, often without you even realising, so, organise your desk into a way that works for you.
If you deal with a lot of paperwork that often finds itself distributed across your desk, get a multi-tray storage solution so that you can sort it into the right piles. If you find it easier to work from files and folders, then invest in a sturdy filing cabinet, which can also double up as additional storage and desk space if needed.
